Are you the Sore Thumb In Interent Marketing?

Idiom Definitions for ‘Stick out like a sore thumb’

If something sticks or stands out like a sore thumb, it is clearly and obviously different from the things that are around it.

Have you ever felt like you are the proverbial sore thumb or the dog’s danglers?

I have and do….everyday.

Computers and the Internet weren’t part of my upbringing or education because being born within the baby boomer era, they simply didn’t exist!

As a result probably 90% of the people testing the waters and trying their hand in internet marketing, are below the age of 40 and have egos to go with it.

Hence sticking out like a sore thumb is part of being a baby boomer internet marketer. “It just aint’ natural” and many younger internet marketers don’t take us seriously or see us as real competition.

How wrong they are!

Do you know why the phrase “sticks out like a sore thumb” came into being?

The obvious answer would be that if you have a sore thumb it’s probably because you’ve hurt it accidentally and because its red and swollen its far more likely to be noticed by anyone who glances at your hand.

Well. If you said that, you’re only partly correcct.

When we’re hurt physically we tend to favor the damaged area in several ways. The obvious one would be to protect it with a surgical dressing, bandage, sling etc; but what do you do with a sore thumb which has been hit by a hammer causing painful bruising but not breaking the skin?

You stick it out to the side out of the way to ensure it doesn’t get bumped or knocked again because if it does cop another bump regardless of how lightly….it *&%$# hurts!

Q) What makes a good boss?

A)

A good boss will send a Sore Thumb victim  home.

If you’re in a physical job which requires you to use your hands and hand tools constantly and you wind up with a sore thumb or finger through a minor accident, a good boss will send you home or depending on the severity, to a doctor or hospital for attention. But that’s not what makes him/her a good boss in such a case.

What makes a good boss is that he/she knows that because you will be favoring the sore thumb or finger by sticking it out, it’s then in a place where it normally wouldn’t be and is even more likely to be damaged more severely because your brain is telling it that it’s where it belongs, when in fact it isn’t and as a result is more likely to be struck again by something which IS where it’s normally supposed to be and your sore thumb or finger isn’t..

Baby boomer internet marketers are a bit like that sore thumb because we’re within a niche we wouldn’t normally be in and as such are more likely to be damaged because we don’t have the basic education that so many of our colleagues and opposition learned as a normal part of their school curriculum as children.

As a result we need to be sent home or we need to learn to keep that sore thumb where the younger ones learned to keep theirs when they were young…….or do we?

As baby boomers what we need…. is to set a course which has all the basics already in place so that we don’t have to learn them or implement them.

My introduction to affiliate marketing was through a course created by Affiliate Marketing Millionaire Mark Ling and was called  AffiloBlueprint. I can honestly say that I learned 80% of what I now know about affiliate marketing through that course and still highly recommend it and promote it but Mark and his team have  just spent nearly the past year setting another such course which alleviates the necessity for all that learning and the sore thumb.

It’s called “AffiloJetpack” and is easily the best such course available anywhere and I highly recommend it.

While Affilojetpack is not specifically targeted at Baby Boomers, I see it as the ideal method for baby boomers to get into Affiliate Marketing while avoiding the sore thumb syndrome so many of us have had to go through.

Find all the information on this Affilojetpack revolutionary course here.

Fishing for Guest Blog Posts

A few days ago I received an offer from a list owner to write a guest blog post on my blog.

While guest blog posts are hardly a new idea for getting traffic to your site, it was the first time someone had actually suggested it to me so it sparked my interest.

Granted that the invitation came from a list I’d previously signed up to, I did have some faith in the sender because he had shown remarkable results from his twitter account and was also a member of a private forum of which I’m also a member.

In the guest blog post invitation, he’s taken steps to make it easy for anyone to contact him if they indeed wanted him to submit a guest post so I did!

He’s made a point of explaining the benefits of guest blog  posts to both the blog owner and himself and also requested an outline of which topic the blog owner would like him to write a guest post on. He also mentioned that the email was being sent to 10,000 subscribers so I’d need to be fast!

Seeing this as a good opportunity to have a well known “twitterer” guest post on my blog, I wrote a detailed email back to him providing all the information he said he required to write the guest blog post and the following is some of what I wrote:

“I’ve been on your list for only a couple of months and joined because I was impressed with some of your posts in the marketing with Alex forum of which I’m also a member.
If you look at my blog you’ll see that I’m a baby boomer hopefully targeting other boomers with the intention of inspiring them to jump on the internet marketing wagon to ensure a regular income for their retirement.
I think the vast majority of people in their 60’s don’t have the skills to operate a computer to the degree where they can set up an internet business, and it’s those skills or the lack of them, I would like your guest blog post to target, in creating an interest in learning them.
The other thing which comes to mind is Australia’s notorious reputation for slow internet connections and how to develop an internet marketing business with that restriction”.

The following day I received the following email from him and my reply:
Hi Sean,

Thanks for the email, but… can you tell me what you want a guest blog post on?

David
“Hi David.

Sorry you didn’t get the gist of what I wanted. I thought I’d mapped it out within the  2 sentences below this message. (now above) If you could write a post on baby boomers entering the Internet marketing field………..with the usual complications and restrictions of not having previously had any formal computer training at school etc.

I realise it’s a broad field to write about but if you can write anything at all which is relevant to the topics it will have the effect you want in providing exposure to yourself and also provide me with a guest blog post etc.”

His reply indicated to me that the whole exercise was a waste of time in that it seemed that he wasn’t interested in carrying out any research on any other topic other than the ones he was familiar with in order to write a guest blog post for anyone.
What he wrote back to me was the following:
Hi Sean,

Seeing as I am not a baby boomer myself, you would be far more qualified to write a post on that topic than me……

Do you have another suggestion for me?

David
I did have another suggestion for him but I think would be inappropriate to include it here.
Now I may be wrong but I think I made the topic of the guest blog post I wanted fairly clear in my first email to him and that realistically, even if only 10% of the people he sent the original email out to wanted him to write a guest post he would be writing 1000 guest blog posts which would keep him busy for quite a long time.
So….I guess it just reinforces what I’ve come to firmly believe and advise. Pay particular attention to whose lists you sign up to and restrict them to only those you completely trust.

I’m now off his list!

About the Nostalgia Page.

This really isn’t the nostalgia page at all. The nostalgia page is in the above margin above the header but I just thought I’d introduce it here.

As a result of the feedback and comments I received about the “Older than dirt” post I thought I’d reserve a special page just for nostalgia.

Since this blog is really from a baby boomer for the benefit of other baby boomers, we should see some amusing and maybe “lump in throat” memories emerge.

The whole idea is to just go to the nostalgia page above and write about a nostalgic memory. Preferably your post should be about things that no longer exist such as the way things were done “back in the olden days when WE were kids”

However you don’t have to be a baby boomer to post on the nostalgia page.

Any interesting stories you might have about the past are welcome. Maybe you heard something from your parents or grandparents which will be fine.

I’ll start it off with a few and hopefully others will add to it as time goes by.

Just click on the nostalgia page at the top of this page or click here to start.

Avoiding Information Overload for Baby Boomer IM’s

There’s a term that’s been floating around internet marketing circles now for some years and is still worth a mention here, if for no other reason than to remind myself of its meaning and complications.

The term is “Information Overload” and can be an extremely serious drawback to budding internet marketers. As a baby boomer I first developed an interest in internet marketing for baby boomers a couple of years ago, but I was restricted to a dial up connection due to living within a region of Australia which had no other form of connection available at that time.

These days I’m still restricted to a satellite connection which is just so much better than dial up and allows me to get serious about internet marketing for baby boomers but information overload has very nearly put an end to a baby boomer’s journey toward internet marketing on numerous occasions. Baby Boomer Blogging for Internet Marketing

A Must Read for every Aspiring Internet Marketer/Blogger. Rob Benwell’s “Blogging to the Bank”Blogging to the bank cover has been the blogging Bible for thousands of IM bloggers and his latest 2010 edition has received countless positive reviews from the world’s most successful and renown Bloggers.

Over the past few weeks since I set out on this venture which is ultimately to learn how to be a baby boomer internet marketer, I’ve come across quite a few unexpected hurdles. When I use the word ‘unexpected’, I do so with tongue in cheek because I knew from the onset that there would be hurdles. However I hadn’t realized that some of these hurdles would take so much time to clear.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that so many of the free tutorials available on the net through places like U-Tube etc, are often out of date soon after they come online because the software they refer to is being constantly updated.

Such is the case with blogging. I think I also mentioned that in building this blog, I’m using wordpress which is a prime example of software being constantly updated.

As a baby boomer with no experience whatsoever with computers until well into my 50’s, getting my head around even the simplest of concepts was initially (and please excuse the pun), a real headache. I didn’t know for example that when a computer is shut down, it should always be done from the start menu, and not just by pulling the plug or using the on/off switch. It’s the simple things like that which kids have been learning at school for the past 20 years that makes new technology for some baby boomers so difficult to grasp. Read the rest of this entry

What is a Widget?

WIKTIONARY’S DEFINITION OF WHAT IS A WIDGET?

1.    An unnamed, unspecified, or hypothetical manufactured good or product.
2.    (graphical user interface) A component of a graphical user interface that the user interacts with.
3.    Portable code that can be easily installed and executed by an end user.
4.    A floating widget or other device inside a beer can, meant to create foam when opened
5.    A small scraping tool consisting of a blade and a handle, commonly used to remove paint from glass and other smooth surfaces.

From this baby boomer’s perspective, the above definitions meant absolutely nothing to me in that they define a widget as being not only a tangible item, but something quite intangible as well but it didn’t provide me with an acceptable answer to what is a widget? on a web page. I created this site as an on going journal and personal record of my travels down the highways of the budding baby boomer entrepreneur internet marketer.

Apart from that being one hell of a mouthful, firstly it’s important for me to remember that one of the first things I learned is that although there is much hype about it being easy to break into this field……It’s not.

I’ve read that the cold hard facts are that 90% of people who try to make money through internet marketing….fail.

But, among the other things I’ve learned, is that if you are willing to work hard and adhere to a set plan, there is every possibility that you can make a good living as a baby boomer internet marketer.

I found that the main problem I faced (and I believe is faced by most of us baby boomers), is a lack of education in computer use and indeed the Internet and its burgeoning Internet Marketing industry.

The vast majority of us had no formal internet or computer related education at school or university simply because the technology was so new that those who did have the opportunity to learn were indeed the developers of the same technology.

My Introduction to Internet Marketing for Baby Boomers

I remember when I was about 16 years old, walking down a street in Newcastle NSW where I grew up…. with my older brother and a couple of friends who were also brothers to each other…. when we walked past a building where a couple of attractive young girls were standing out the front handing out Read the rest of this entry
